Documentary
Xiao Wu

The Yi ethnic group is a minority in China, primarily residing in the southwestern regions such as Sichuan and Yunnan. They are known for their unique traditional festivals like the Yi New Year, Torch Festival, and exquisite craftsmanship in silverware.
“Xiao Wu” is a documentary that delves into the living conditions of Yi ethnic boxers in Shanghai. As a fellow from Liangshan Prefecture, I collaborated with the Shanghai Yi Association to document the struggles and challenges of Yi youth, led by Xiao Wu, as they strive for a livelihood in the city. Field Insight
In the making of "Xiao Wu," I conducted a five-month field investigation to deeply understand their living customs and cultural background. I discovered that in the Muli area of Liangshan Prefecture, many children from underprivileged homes are selected, like Xiao Wu, to undergo boxing training, eventually making their way to the city. This is one of the few paths available to them.
Urban Life Challenges
Despite Shanghai's reputation for cultural inclusivity, in my communications with Xiao Wu, I found that they feel strongly marginalized in the city. The law of the jungle seems to still apply here.
